Have you ever wondered what the difference is between people who do amazing things and those who don't?Important: Great is your own definition, not anyone else's.The first group is filled with people who go for it.This is what I love about the people I have met in my facilities management career. You guys are resilient group of people who do not settle for good enough.Take my friend Ray for example. I can't wait for you guys to see what he has created to solve one of the restaurant facilities managers' biggest problems. He told me about it, and it will be a game changer? He didn't sit around and wait for someone to give him the permission to think about a problem in a completely different way. He just gave himself permission and made it.Or my former employer, Advanced Retail Solutions. When Michael was starting the company a lot of people told him he would never be able to create a multi-trade self performing maintenance company, especially with a team of inexperienced twenty-somethings. But he did it anyway. He chose to focus on out-caring his competition, and his business has been blowing up year after year.On the retail side, my friends Laurie and Clif choose to make the relationships with their contractors a priority over every other metric. They stand up for their contractors and fight for fairness. What happened as a result? They have some of the most loyal vendors and suppliers who prioritize their business over other accounts. These are all people who decided to be great, who do what they feel is best and right, and then take responsibility if they are wrong. And they aren't the only ones. Our industry is rapidly changing, growing more sophisticated, and are fighting becoming commoditization. If you're thinking, "I wish I could be like that. More brave. More courageous. A leader among my peers."Here's the truth. You can.All it takes is a choice. I hope you make that choice. There is an insane amount of opportunity out there for you.I hope 2014 is the year you go for it. Whatever it is.
